Opals can actually be up to 30% water. This is the reason why they sometimes can crack in the jewellery boxes if the air is too dry inside. Put a wet tissue paper in the box where you keep an opal to prevent its cracking.

Silver is used in water purifiers. It prevents bacteria and algae from building up in filters. The catalytic action of silver, in concert with oxygen, sanitizes water and eliminates the need for chlorine. Copper is used for electrical purposes even though the electrical conductivity of silver is higher (in fact it is the highest of all metals). The reason for not using silver is its high price, of course.
