Rose quartz, smoky quartz, amethyst and citrine is colored quartz. Rock crystal is another name for the clear quartz usually given to it to give a good reason to sell it for a higher price. All gems of the quartz family are semi-precious stones.

I've decided to take a challenge and publish our Australian trip, 2011 pictures in my Twitter account. There will be 365 pictures with one published every day. I will reserve my blog's Throwback Thursday for the videos of that trip (they will be very short videos from a few seconds to one minute) starting not the following week yet, but the week after.

They do not let us hug koalas in Sydney and Melbourne, so we kept driving up north looking for a nature park where we could hug a koala. We eventually found it in Brisbane.
This necklace I am wearing has been sold. You can take a closer look at it here. Before it was sold it inspired a custom order: another necklace, earrings and ring (you can find all of them here). I took a few pieces of jewellery to Australia hoping to find a gallery there. I have not found one. All pieces came back with me and found their Canadian owners :) All except one. It is made of copper and brass and got oxidized. Maybe one day I will clean it and publish it my etsy shop.

Amber is fossilized tree resin (not sap), which has been known to be used in jewellery since Neolithic times. Amber is 100 to 120 million years old. Fossilized tree resin that is younger than that is called copal and can be sometimes sold as amber, even though it is not qualified for that.

Some beetles from the family Elateridae, as well as true fireflies from the family Lampyridae produce glowing light and have been captured and used as decorations in hair or attached to clothing for special occasions, adding to the festivity of the event. C.H. Curran in Insects of the Pacific World, referred to ladies from India and Sri Lanka, having kept 11/2 inch long, iridescent greenish coppery beetles of the species Chrysochroa ocellata as pets. These living jewels were worn on festive occasions, probably with a small chain attached to one leg anchored to the clothing to prevent escape. Afterwards, the insects were bathed, fed, and housed in decorative cages. Living jeweled beetles have also been worn and kept as pets in Mexico. (More about beetles used as accessories here)
