#jewelleryfacts365 55/365 Iolite

Saturday, March 26, 2016

The name "iolite" comes from the Greek word for violet. Another old name is dichroite, a Greek word meaning "two-colored rock", a reference to iolite's strong pleochroism. It has also been called "water-sapphire" and "Vikings' Compass" because the Vikings have used it to find the sun on a cloudy day.
