Jewelry boxes made of birch bark

Thursday, May 14, 2015

These are the last jewelry boxes that are mine that I want to show in this blog. They are very Russian :) I do not know if there is a similar folk art in any other country... but you certainly can get a large variety of items made and decorated with birch bark in Russia. They are often finely pierced.... and I love pierced pretty much anything :) So, I love my boxes a lot. Originally I got them to give away as gifts, but I could not part with them :)

I have found a couple of DIYs for anybody who is curious about making bark boxes. One is in English, but the boxes do not look like these at all. Here it is.

Another one is in Russian, I've put it through Google-translation for you. There are many pictures that show the process there. The boxes look just like mine (very close to them). This DIY is for somebody who is good with the tools. Here is the link.

I would love to make something like this. Though I probably will never attempt... just because I am very careful with my time and prefer to stick to jewelry making :)

Holy moly! Those are so intricate! I definitely don't have the patience for them, but can appreciate how much work and love are put in to them!

I would say, you'd need skills more than you'd need patience. However... you need patience to get those skills :)

Wow so pretty! They don't look like they'd be made out of birch bark, it almost looks like gold!

In person they do not look metallic at all! They look like light colored wood (and this is basically what they are)

They're lovely Natalia. I love birch as a wood because it's so pale and she makes it look so easy in the pictures! There's a Palladian country mansion down the road from us that had a couple of trees (mostly birch & beech) blown down in the winter storms. A local sculptor has turned the stumps into the most beautiful woodland creatures. Right by the road he's sculpted a 6 foot owl out of what anyone else would have used as firewood! It's beautiful with the natural grain & colours shining through!

Oh, I love wooden sculptures! Every country has their own style. I loved Russian "street art". North America has a very distinct style too.

Since I got curious what could be carved out of a log... I googled for a carved owl :) This is what I found: http://www.treesculpting.co.uk/g_oakowlbench.html Fantastic! (probably not the own you mentioned, as this one was made of oak)

It's wonderful - I think it's good for the soul that we have such creative people (including yourself) among us. Every time I see something like this that has taken time and passion it makes me smile and that's no bad thing, is it?

That is a wonderful thing! :)
